Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Santen) licenses development, manufacturing and marketing rights of its hydrophobic acrylic lens material to Bausch & Lomb Inc. (B&L)

March 3, 2009---Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd (Osaka, Japan) announced today that its consolidated subsidiary, Advanced Vision Science, Inc. (California), signed a license agreement with Bausch & Lomb Inc. (New York) for the development, manufacturing and marketing rights of its foldable hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens material in all geographic regions except Japan. The financial terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.

The AVS material is a new hydrophobic acrylic material designed to provide excellent mechanical characteristics and clarity. The AVS material has been marketed by Santen in Japan since July 2008 as the Eternity intraocular lens (IOL). The Eternity IOL was designed to provide superior fundus visibility, and feedback from Japanese surgeons has been very positive with many doctors commenting that the lens helps them to better manage cataract patients with retinal complications such as diabetes milletus. The material is CE marked and was recently approved by the FDA on February 2, 2009. B&L highly evaluated the AVS material and plans to develop next-generation IOLs using the material.

B&L is a highly recognized worldwide leader in ophthalmic surgical devices and instruments and Santen is pleased that this agreement will allow doctors and patients outside Japan to have access to the benefits of the AVS material.
