Chapter 1 : Birth of Daigaku Eye Drops
Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was founded more than 115 years ago. The
Company is now a leading ophthalmic pharmaceutical company in the Japanese
and global markets, with sales of ophthalmics (eye drops) representing
over 80 percent of Company sales. However, eye drops were not the Company's
original business. Nine years after its foundation, Santen launched
Daigaku Eye Drops
, which became a hit product and supported the
Company's growth in the early years. Today, more than a century after
the launch of our first product, the
Daigaku Eye Drops
brand remains
the longest-selling eye drop brand in Japan.

Chapter 2 : Focusing on Eye Drops
Due to air strikes during World War II, the Head Office, the Koraibashi
Plant, the Nakazakicho Plant, and the Sakuragawa Plant in Osaka burned
down, causing a time of great hardship. The determination and foresight
to focus on eye drops and concentrate business resources in this area
helped the Company out of its difficulties.

Chapter 3 : Prescription Drugs Become Santen's Main Produts
Santen entered an era of rapid growth with the successive launch of new
prescription products such as
Timoptol
,
Tarivid
and
Rimatil
. Business expanded accordingly, and the Company opened the Central Research
Laboratories in Osaka and the Noto Plant in Ishikawa, as well as branch
offices all over Japan.

Chapter 4 : A New Growth Stage
Based on the expertise it had accumulated in the prescription ophthalmic
market in Japan, Santen began establishing a foothold in overseas markets.
Santen now has eleven operational bases in seven countries overseas, including
the United States, Germany and Finland.
