About AVS

Advanced Vision Science, Inc. (AVS) is a California based medical device company specializing in the research, development and manufacturing of ophthalmic medical devices including intraocular lenses and lens material. AVS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Santen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, a Japanese company specializing in the development, manufacturing and marketing of ophthalmic products to protect and improve people’s eyesight and health.​

AVS has been manufacturing ophthalmic devices since 1975. The AVS quality system is certified to ISO 13485. The facility is registered by the US FDA and Japanese MHLW.​

Ophthalmic Medical Devices

AVS develops and manufactures ophthalmic surgical devices including various types of intraocular lenses (IOLs).

The Advanced Vision Science Foldable Hydrophobic Acrylic IOL is the first foldable hydrophobic acrylic lens proven to be glistening free. The lens was launched in Japan in July 2008 and is marketed by Santen under the brand name “Eternity”. The lens is developed in several models including the 6mm and 7mm optic body.

A blue-light blocking version of the lens – “Eternity-Natural” received PMDA approval in 2009.
The W-60 6mm single piece lens marketed under the brand name "Eternity Uni" received approval in 2011.
The hydrophobic acrylic lens material and line-extensions is licensed to and marketed in the rest of world by Bausch & Lomb Inc. (B&L).
 

Research & Development

R&D engineers are working on prototype development, process fixture development for manufacturing, SolidWorks modeling, optical data collection, mechanical data collection, and statistical analysis.

Work includes various machine-shop equipment including CNC machines and a variety of characterization equipment utilizing spectrophotometry, interferometry, and wavefront-analysis.
