Measures against Climate Change

The Santen Group promotes efforts to reduce Greenhouse Gas (CO2) emissions as a measure against global warming, in order to protect and preserve the global environment, and pass on a beautiful planet to the generations that follow.

Detailed information on Greenhouse Gas (CO2) Emissions is disclosed in the Environmental Data Book.

Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (CO2) Emissions

The Santen Group devotes positive efforts to reducing CO2 emissions, which account for the majority of greenhouse gases the group emits, by replacing old combustion-based equipment with non-combustion-based equipment, and saving a larger amount of energy by introducing high-efficiency equipment. As a result of these efforts, we succeeded in reducing CO2 emissions per unit of consolidated revenue from 299 tons per billion yen in FY2012 to 148 tons per billion yen in FY2017, constituting a 50% reduction. We also appropriately control CFC gases that can affect global warming, and our CFC gas emissions are below the legal and regulatory standards for reporting in Japan, where we generate most of our CFC gas emissions.

With regard to our operations in Japan, which account for 74% of our total CO2 emissions, we have participated in the low-carbon society action plan of the Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers' Association of Japan since 2013, and have been striving to achieve our medium-term target of reducing FY2020 CO2 emissions from our domestic operations by 23% from FY2005. Santen's domestic CO2 emissions in FY2017 were 24,867 tons, 30% lower than FY2005, which exceeds the medium-term target.

The Santen Group has adopted a policy of continuing its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the future even as our production grows. More specifically, we have set a medium-term target of a 10% reduction of group-wide CO2 emissions in FY2020 compared with FY2005.

Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (CO2) Emissions from our Supply Chains

In Japan, we assess not only Greenhouse Gas (CO2) emissions from Santen, but also those from Scope 3, in other words, our supply chains resulting from the purchase of raw materials, the distribution of products, and the movement of employees and strive to reduce CO2 emissions. Scope 3 CO2 emissions in FY2017, which we have started to estimate since FY2016, amounted to 162,939 tons, 5.4% higher than previous year, however, the non-consolidated emissions per unit of revenue were 948 tons/billion yen, 3.7% lower than previous year.

Environmental Consideration in Production and Logistics

Production stage

Santen has formulated the Green Procurement Guidelines, which define the principles of various kinds of procurement in the production stage, and strives to procure eco-friendly products and raw materials with the understanding and cooperation of suppliers.

Logistics stage

In February 2014, Santen began to use lighter and smaller corrugated cardboard boxes for logistics use, to reduce fuel consumption for transport and wastes. We thus contribute to the prevention of global warming.
