Reducing our Environmental Impact
The Santen Group is seeking to reduce environmental impact through various measures, including reducing waste, conserving water resources and preventing environmental pollution, so as to pass on a beautiful planet to the generations that follow.

In Japan, Santen promote the 3R initiatives of "Reducing" the production of waste, "Reusing" packaging and stationery used during the distribution process, and "Recycling" waste by sorting, at each operational site. Furthermore, we ensure that our waste is properly treated at our outsourced waste disposal service provider by confirming the waste policy, and the form of management of the waste treatment, and by making regular visits to the service provider. Before concluding an agreement with a new outsourced waste disposal service provider, we visit the outsourced service provider and check that appropriate waste treatment is being conducted.
Significantly exceeding our FY2017 final waste disposal rate target of 0.02% or lower, we achieved a final disposal rate of 0.014% in that fiscal year.
The Santen Group's consolidated volume of FY2017 final waste disposal was 62.1 tons, a 32% reduction from FY2012, while the entire group's FY2017 final waste disposal rate was 2.1%, 0.4 points lower than the figure of FY2012.
We have set a medium-term target of limiting our group-wide final disposal rate below the current level until FY2020 by making sustained efforts to reduce waste into the future even as our production grows.

Conservation of Water Resources
While no Santen Group plants or laboratories are located in areas under water stress, (Note) we view water as a precious resource and are striving to reduce our environmental impact by restricting water consumption and other means. Our water consumption per unit of revenue in FY2017 was 2,400 m3 per billion yen, constituting a 49% reduction from FY2012. We have set a medium-term target of maintaining our water consumption per unit of revenue below the FY2017 level until FY2020 by making sustained efforts to restrict our water consumption into the future even as our production grows.

In Japan, Santen has compiled green procurement guidelines that summarize the points to note in procuring various materials required for production, in order to obtain environmentally conscious products and raw materials with the collaboration and understanding of our suppliers. We also promote green purchasing, an initiative promoting the purchase of office supplies such as paper and stationery items with the least possible environmental impact, such as products including at least some amount of recycled resources or products recyclable at disposal.
Appropriate Control of Chemical Substances
The Santen Group seeks to provide appropriate control of chemical substances at every operational site that handles chemical substances. In Japan, based on the Law concerning Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (hereinafter, "PRTR") and the Industrial Safety and Health Act. Among the 462 Type 1 Specified Chemical Substances according to PRTR, the substances of which we handled more than 1 kg per year in FY2017 were 30 substances with a total mass of 3,527 kg, including acetonitrile, 1,753 kg, boron and its compounds, 988 kg, and xylene, 570 kg. Because more than one ton of acetonitrile per year was handled at a single operational site, we registered the amount of release into the air as well as the amount of transfer to the outside of the operational site according to the PRTR.
Furthermore, we introduced a "system for controlling chemical substances" to provide centralized control of the amount released and stored and the location of storage, as well as to appropriately purchase and use chemical substances. In order to reduce the release of chemical substances into the air as well as to decrease the impact on the environment, we installed an instrument to recover organic solvents, and ensure that the performance of the instrument is maintained through inspection and maintenance of the instrument.

Prevention of Environmental Pollution
The Santen Group regularly measures and analyzes a variety of indices at each operational site, including air pollution, water contamination and noise levels, in order to appropriately control and identify pollution levels according to the regulatory standards stipulated in laws and local regulations.
We also compile procedures to prevent the leakage of pollution and install equipment that prevents wastewater leaked from the storage container from flowing into the general discharge channel outside the plant, and practice the operation thereof. We establish the system to prevent impact on the environment and the neighborhood.
